This sun loving perennial, Centranthus ruber, has star-shaped, carmine-rose flowers blooming in dense clusters and shiny, blue-green leaves. Commonly referred to as Jupiter’s Beard, Centranthus ruber provides interest all summer as cutting the flowers will stimulate reblooming, making it a popular choice for those that love cut flower arrangements. Due to its ability to rebloom, butterflies and hummingbirds are drawn to this plant. The plant has a clump forming habit with woody-based stems.
Centranthus ruber is commonly used in naturalized areas, borders and cottage gardens. The plant can self-sow if the blooms are not deadheaded. It grows best in full sun and alkaline, well-drained soil. Jupiter’s Beard does prefer cool summer climates and can be found to grow less vigorously in hot and humid summers. Additionally, growing in poor, infertile soil tends to result in a more compact plant.
